Parmi les objets nouveaux qui, pendant mon séjour aux États-Unis, ont attiré mon attention, aucun n'a plus vivement frappé mes regards que l'égalité des conditions. Je découvris sans peine l'influence prodigieuse qu'exerce ce premier fait sur la marche de la société. Among the novel objects that attracted my attention during my stay in the United States, nothing struck me more forcibly than the general equality of condition among the people. I readily discovered the prodigious influence that this primary fact exercises on the whole course of society.
Il donne à l'esprit public une certaine direction, un certain tour aux lois ; aux gouvernants des maximes nouvelles, et des habitudes particulières aux gouvernés. It gives a peculiar direction to public opinion and a peculiar tenor to the laws; it imparts new maxims to the governing authorities and peculiar habits to the governed.

De la Tyrannie de la Majorité On the Tyranny of the Majority
Je regarde comme impie et détestable cette maxime, qu'en matière de gouvernement la majorité d'un peuple a le droit de tout faire, et pourtant je place dans les volontés de la majorité l'origine de tous les pouvoirs. I hold it to be an impious and detestable maxim that, politically speaking, the people have a right to do anything; and yet I have asserted that all authority originates in the will of the majority.
Qu'est-ce donc qu'une majorité prise collectivement, sinon un individu qui a des opinions et le plus souvent des intérêts contraires à un autre individu qu'on nomme la minorité? What is a majority, taken collectively, but an individual having opinions, and frequently interests, contrary to those of another individual, who is styled a minority?

De l'Individualisme On Individualism
L'individualisme est une expression récente qu'une idée nouvelle a fait naître. Nos pères ne connaissaient que l'égoïsme. L'égoïsme est un amour passionné et exagéré de soi-même. L'individualisme est un sentiment réfléchi et paisible. Individualism is a novel expression, to which a novel idea has given birth. Our fathers were only acquainted with egoism. Egoism is a passionate and exaggerated love of self. Individualism is a mature and calm feeling.
L'individualisme dispose chaque citoyen à s'isoler de la masse de ses semblables et à se retirer à l'écart avec sa famille et ses amis; de telle sorte que, après s'être ainsi créé une petite société à son usage, il abandonne volontiers la grande société à elle-même. Individualism disposes each citizen to isolate himself from the mass of his fellows and withdraw into the circle of family and friends; with this little society formed to his taste, he gladly leaves the greater society to look after itself.
Des Associations On Associations
Les Américains de tous les âges, de toutes les conditions, de tous les esprits, s'unissent sans cesse. Non seulement ils ont des associations commerciales et industrielles auxquelles tous prennent part, mais ils en ont encore de mille autres espèces. Americans of all ages, all conditions, and all dispositions constantly form associations. They have not only commercial and manufacturing companies, but associations of a thousand other kinds.

De la Religion On Religion
Il n'y a pas de pays au monde où la religion chrétienne conserve une plus grande influence sur les âmes des hommes qu'en Amérique; et il ne peut y avoir de plus grande preuve de son utilité et de sa conformité avec la nature humaine, qu'elle exerce la plus grande puissance sur la nation la plus éclairée et la plus libre. There is no country in the world where the Christian religion retains a greater influence over the souls of men than in America; and there can be no greater proof of its utility and of its conformity to human nature than that its influence is most powerfully felt over the most enlightened and free nation of the earth.
De l'Égalité On Equality
Il y a en effet une passion mâle et légitime pour l'égalité qui excite les hommes à vouloir être tous forts et estimés. Cette passion tend à élever les petits au rang des grands. There is indeed a manly and legitimate passion for equality that incites men to wish all to be powerful and honored. This passion tends to elevate the humble to the rank of the great.
Mais il se rencontre aussi dans le cœur humain un goût dépravé pour l'égalité, qui porte les faibles à vouloir attirer les forts à leur niveau, et qui réduit les hommes à préférer l'égalité dans la servitude à l'inégalité dans la liberté. But there exists also in the human heart a depraved taste for equality, which impels the weak to attempt to lower the powerful to their own level and reduces men to prefer equality in slavery to inequality with freedom.

Le Despotisme Doux Soft Despotism
Je veux imaginer sous quels traits nouveaux le despotisme pourrait se produire dans le monde. Je vois une foule innombrable d'hommes semblables et égaux qui tournent sans repos sur eux-mêmes pour se procurer de petits et vulgaires plaisirs, dont ils emplissent leur âme. I seek to trace the novel features under which despotism may appear in the world. I see an innumerable multitude of men, alike and equal, constantly circling around in pursuit of the petty and banal pleasures with which they fill their souls.
Au-dessus de ceux-là s'élève un pouvoir immense et tutélaire, qui se charge seul d'assurer leurs jouissances et de veiller sur leur sort. Il est absolu, détaillé, régulier, prévoyant et doux. Above this race of men stands an immense and tutelary power, which takes upon itself alone to secure their gratifications and to watch over their fate. That power is absolute, minute, regular, provident, and mild.

Les nations de nos jours ne sauraient faire que dans leur sein les conditions ne soient pas égales; mais il dépend d'elles que l'égalité les conduise à la servitude ou à la liberté, aux lumières ou à la barbarie, à la prospérité ou aux misères. The nations of our time cannot prevent the conditions of men from becoming equal, but it depends upon themselves whether the principle of equality is to lead them to servitude or freedom, to knowledge or barbarism, to prosperity or wretchedness.
